Is it narcissistic to write about your own life? I don't take selfies, partly because I have a head like a dropped pie, and partly because I don't know that the sweet, innocent internet needs more images of people's heads. So, should the same logic apply to words; are there already too many. I'm torn - I will quickly lose interest in most topics, so why should I assume people would feel any different hearing about my universe. Regardless of this conflict I will push on.
A common expression in the world of cliches is that "opposites attract", and let's be honest when Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat belted out said phrase in 1989 who were we to disagree?
Which brings me to my present observation, my wife and I aren't opposites. Sure, there are the obvious elements like man bits and lady bits, or that she doesn't suffer male pattern baldness , but physical elements aside we are similar folk. Both of us prefer quiet to loud, to observe rather than be observed, stir our tea counter clockwise rather than clockwise, and for the most part fear Demogorgans. However, one intrinsic element separates us completely, the Bell Curve.
See, whilst Peta is by no means average she is consistent, moving smoothly across the emotional continuum of life. Our daughter can eye gauge her, wipe snot on her shirt and throw a handful of Lego shrapnel at Peta and you will only see a mild deviation from her calm and loving demeanour. It is this consistency of character that makes Peta such a caring and magnetic character, I am yet to meet a person that does not speak glowingly of the positive influence that she has made in their lives, or express amazement at how I ended up with her. I on the other hand am far from consistent, and my transition between emotions is far from sequential, so much so that my colleagues have drawn a pie chart to represent my emotions; the two segments are 'Furious' and 'Who is this Stranger?'.
Continuing from my previous observations, this is probably why I find everything confusing, irrationality will do that when you view the same situation from opposite poles in the space of milliseconds it can be hard to reach a true conclusion.
I guess that this is our 'opposites attract' moment, we diverge on rationality and it works. As parents, Peta hold the family together whilst I can go off like a kettle boiling when Charli misbehaves, and seconds later be engaging her in the tickle fight to end all tickle fights. I'm sure it confuses both Peta and Charli (and all others in my immediate orbit), but it is who we are and we have found a way to make it work. Peta is the Paula Abdul to my MC Skat Kat, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Post Script - I would like this to also serve as an open apology to all of Peta's friend who tolerate me and my social awkwardness.
