Hello. My name is Shane and chances are you've forgotten who I am since I make so very little effort to keep in touch.
In short, I am a 41 year old man who for a while thought he would be a mountain biker, and then a snowboarder, and then a photographer - none of which I was all that great at. Then I became a husband, subsequently a father and all the while worked at becoming a professional. Occasionally I would be a friend, sometimes a son and brother, usually distant but always convinced I was pursuing some aspiration to be a better person.
Currently I live by the ocean, historically I have lived in the mountains, most of the time I sleep in a house with a tile roof (with our dog at the foot of my bed), but I am equally at home sleeping in a tent. So what is the point of all this? I don't know - and I think that is the point, it is okay to not know, even if you are a 41 year old with a mortgage and family.
Further to this epiphany, I do not believe I am a unique snowflake when it comes to this. As I sit quietly and watch the world pass by I wonder how many others go through each and every day thinking what the hell comes next? Is it 1 in 10? Maybe 1 in 3? Does my confusion show externally? How do other people hide their confusion so confidently? If they aren't confused, why not?
Personally, I don't want to know what comes next. The adventure and excitement that comes from not knowing what the future holds can be invigorating, I would like to believe though that no matter what it is I would be able to handle it. And here lies the torturous paradox that is my life: I do not like predictability - but I find routine and order comforting. Hopefully as I grow, I become more comfortable with myself, identify who I am, what inspires me and maybe even take a risk or two. With my wife and daughter on my side at least I know we will be having fun.
